After my main hard drive failed, I had to pull out my old hard drive which contains a system image of my system. I tried to boot off it so I could restore the system back but of course it wouldn't work as the drive doesn't have an OS on it. I currently don't have any windows discs that came with my laptop in order to make my life easier. How can I restore the system image onto the same hard drive it is stored on without an operating system? I was thinking possibly a bootable CD would do the trick but I can't seem to find anyone in my same situation on google. If I can't do this, my only option is to lose all my data by restoring my system with a partition on the hard drive. Thanks.

Hi,

Here's what you can do:
- First you'll need to order a System Recovery disc from the manufacturer of your laptop.
- Install your new replacement HDD in your laptop.
- Once you have the recovery disc, install it into your new HDD.
- Next is to use your old (defective) HDD as an external driver hoping that it would still work since you said it's already is defective.
- Use a HDD enclosure so it would be an external driver and see if you can still recovery some of your file in it.
- Here's a sample of a HDD enclosure: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=0VN-0003-000H3

Hey, I appreciate the response. Sorry that I didn't make it very clear but my main hard drive is basically beyond repair and recovery. I plan to use my current internal backup drive as the new primary drive. I checked the backup drive on Hirens boot cd and it has all my files stored that I had on my main drive, including my OS, all contained in the windows backup folder. I checked on my manufacturers website and there is no system recovery discs. They instead use hard drive partitions which would require deleting all my stuff on the backup. I'm wondering if there is anyway I could access the data stored on the backup hard drive to make it into a primary drive which can boot without copying the files across to another hard drive and then partitioning my backup drive?
