Laptop won't turn on but it charges and lights sometimes come on, too?

Hello, everybody. So my ASUS A53E Laptop randomly turned off yesterday while my brother was using it. It hadn't done that before. When I tried turning it on again, it wouldn't, the screen simply remained black.

Sometimes when I press the power button, the lights turn on, and momentarily, I am able to see the "ASUS" startup screen, before the screen eventually goes black. The lights also turn off when this happens.

What's strange is the following: when I do hold down the power button, the light on the actual button turns on (which is what is meant to happen when you press it), but as soon as I let go, it goes off. The screen doesn't flash nor turn on. Just black as usual. The power button only seems to be working when the charger is plugged into the laptop. Without the charger plugged in, all lights are off and power button doesn't light up either.

The charger works fine because the light is green, both on the actual charger and on the laptop. Another odd thing: when I close the laptop, the light indicating the power is on suddenly turns green (even though the screen is black), but as soon as I open it, it turns off. I don't hear any sounds indicating that the laptop is actually running.

I've tried taking the battery out and doing that hold the power button for 30-90 seconds thing. It hasn't worked and I've tried it at least a few times. I've even left the laptop rest overnight without the battery and with the charger unplugged with no results. Can someone please help me? What could be wrong with my laptop?

Solution
At first it seems like it's a shortage in the power button, but since you don't have that problem when your plugged in, that can't be the problem.

Here are a few things to try, and hopefully it might just fix some of those problems:

Update the BIOS.
Update ALL drivers (if some are already up to date, don't bother reinstalling).

If those two things don't work then the only option I can give you is to send it to Asus and see what they can do. However that laptop is aged by now, I'd get a new laptop if possible.
