Laptop display fault behaviour

My laptop screen has started playing up. Once it has been on a while, it flickers, and flashes on/off and thengoes black with a very thin green line down the left hand edge.

However, if I have an external monitor attached, then it is the monitor that exhibits this behaviour, and the laptop does not.

What is at fault here? Clearly not a laptop screen fault.. but if it is the video card then wouldn't that affect both displays??

Any help gratefully received.

Hi - thanks for the reply.
Are you referring to the external HDMI / VGA port on the laptop? If so, why would that cause a problem with the built in display?

The issue is with the built in display, and then with the external display also, if I plug one in.

The odd thing is that when I have use extended desktop with the external display, the issue then ONLY occurs on the external display, and NOT on the built in display.

Many thanks again..

When you start using your laptop the laptop is cold as it warms up the internal components including solder joints warm too. As solder and metal components get warmer they expand and solder flows. Making the display port connector rejoin with the motherboard if the fault is with the connector this can cause intermittent connection flickering then a better connection your black screen and green line . When the external display is connected the fault is present the weight to the plug on the cable is enough disconnect the pin or joint on the laptop connector causing this fault thus no laptop screen fault. Well that my guess hope it made sense. I really would check the display connector on the motherboard. It could even be a pin shorting as the laptop warms up.

I will check that first thanks...
Though, the problem seems to occur as the laptop warms.
It is ok for a long period after initial power up, and then start intermittently exhibiting this fault.

Also, seems very odd that the built in display is absolutely fine, when the external monitor is showing the fault...

I'm only suggesting where I would look as a last resort 'm not suggesting that it is the exact fault if you have never taken a laptop apart, I would let a shop check it for you and maybe wait for other idea's.
Out of interest what happens if the external display is turned off but still connected does the fault still occur on the internal lcd panel

If the external monitor exhibits the fault, and I turn it off, then no, the fault does not transfer to the internal lcd.

The fault only seems to occur on the primary display of the extended desktop i.e.the part with the Taskbar on it.

UPDATE:
I have since switched the Taskbar to the laptop element of the extended desktop.
And still, when the fault arises on extended desktop, it is the external monitor affected.
When external monitor not connected, fault arises on internal lcd.

??? :??:

As long as the monitor in on or off is plugged in to the laptop no fault to laptop screen disconnect the plug from the laptop eventually you have the screen fault now on the laptop internal monitor.
Now the next question is does the fault take longer to appear when warm rather than cold or about the same time.
As said if the monitor is plugged in to the socket giving weight to the connector and no fault displayed then i would say it is a connector issue.
Just leave an adaptor attached to the connector if you can use the laptop without an external display it will save you making work for yourself if you need to an external display then I would look at the connector.

Not sure I follow you now...
The fault appears once the laptop is warm.

I need an extended desktop.

What I really need is to know what the heck is causing this, so I can get it fixed! lol

You did say if you leave the display connected and turned the monitor off the fault is not transferred to the laptop screen and only displayed when warm and disconnected from the monitor so I'm 99.9 percent sure it's a fault on the display port on your motherboard where you plug the external monitor into. This is where I would check with a meter. Run the idea by a repair shop see what they think you don't have to leave it they may have other idea's but you would find out the cost.
