Hey People,

So I need to buy a new headset,and I'm a student on a budget.

I'm an avid gamer and love FPS and loving RAINBOW SIX :Seige at the moment.

I'm looking for a headset that can give me good sound and "location sound" as some would say.For instance, hear footsteps, gun clips etc.

Now online there is a lot of talk about headsets not being actually 7.1 without sound card and its virtual surround sound and being better of with stereo sound etc.

To keep things simple...should i buy a Turtle Beach x12 for PC with is "Stero" sound and use some virtually surround sound program or buy a headset on amazon that claims to be 7.1 surround sound like the TeckNet® 7.1 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00EZCU5PY/ref=s9_simh_gw_p23_d0_i1?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=desktop-1&pf_rd_r=16HQNHJB2WPSZYPYCKCJ&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=577048787&pf_rd_i=desktop)

Advice is needed.

Thanks girls and boys.

All headsets that claim 7.1 surround sound really just emulate it. The "location sound" you are referring to is officially called sound stage.

That said, you will not find a pair of headphones in your price range that has a good sound stage. Both of the one's you mentioned are trash.

These are currently the cheapest pair of headphones that have a decent sound stage.

Thanks for you're reply thor220.

Them headphones are actually the same price on Amazon as it would be for me to go into shop tomorrow and get the Turtle Beach x12's so that's very good.Although there is no mic that is not a very important issue as i do have a snowball microphone.

Could I ask what makes that have good sound stage if its not surround sound? When I say I want good "location sound" as I called it I mean like tell the difference between a noise behind me to the left and under me to the left etc.

How come when I used to use the Turtle Beach x31's on the xbox back in the day the worked fine for "sound whoring" as gamers would call it.

Also just in case you have any good recommendations slightly more expensive my Budget is about €60.

Appreciate the help.

Yep that's what sound stage means. The ability to tell the difference between different sounds and their direction. You'll be able to find other good headphones you are looking for by using the term "soundstage" as well because it is widely in use.

What makes the headphones I linked have a good soundstage is good design. Turtle Beach designs their headphones with gamers in mind. As we all know, gamers are not audio experts and often buy headphones with gimmicks instead of actual quality, like virtual 7.1 surround sound.

Just a note about the headphones I linked, they are open. This means that when you are wearing them, people around you will be able to hear what you are doing. Please tell me if this is a problem for you.

That is because Turtle Beach headphones will use software equalization to amplify frequencies in games known for footsteps and gunshots and decrease the frequencies for useless background noise. This can be done through any soundcard for free or in most video game menus and doesn't actually have anything to do with sound quality. They do have a decent sound stage, although nothing compared to many other headphones.

Ah fantastic detailed information, thanks so much.Delighted I posted this thread and got saved for buying the x12's.

After looking at reviews on amazon, youtube etc it seems like the Superlux HD668B Headphones are absolutely perfect for what I want out of a pair of headphones.Lots of people on youtube saying how fantastic the quality and how good the sound stage is.As far as them being Open I'm fine with that,Id never have them crazy loud anyway as they are headphones. And along as they don't wake up the girlfriend when I'm playing games at all hours of the morning I'll be fine.

When I looked up online I was seeing people mentioning "mod mics",is this headset compatible with it and what is it exactly? As I said I have snowball so will be okay otherwise but just curious.

Thanks so much for all the information.

Modmic will work with any headphones. It's a 2 part system. The one part attached to one of the headphone's cups while the 2nd part is a magnetic boom mic. If snaps on and off easily so you can get rid of the mic when you don't need it.
