Will my speakers produce surround sound?

I've recently been given an old DD 5.1 amp and speaker system but I'm not sure it will produce surround sound. It doesn't have toslink or hdmi inputs - I was planning on running a toslink cable from my tv, through an adapter to l / r cable into the amplifier.

I hope this makes sense and people might be able to advise. Cheers!

impossible to tell without knowing what inputs the old system has. if its only red + white rca then no. if its analog 6ch input then yes with the proper converter box (5.1 audio extractor).
