Hello all
I have a lenovo laptop running on windows 8.1
its around 6 yrs old laptop
original lenovo battery
4gb/core 2 duo/ 500gb/15.6
using a soldered charger cable

I am facing a display problem since few days.

Few days ago all of a sudden, the display doesnt turn on, on switching on the laptop.

This happened for the first time few days ago, all of sudden after a heavy usage throughout the day

I ws looking up for solutions online
and found videos on youtube suggesting to drain excess static charge by removing battery and pressing down the power button fr a few mins.. repeated the same few times.. did that..but der was no use

Finally when i connected my laptop to an external monitor and turned on the laptop, laptop display turned on normally like earlier. After disconnecting the external monitor things wer back to normal
This ws few days ago

Now i am facing the problem again since yesterday, but this time the laptop display s turning on only when it is connected to an external monitor and not otherwise

Sorry for the long post
I would be greatful if somebody can tell me what could be the problem

Solution
For a core 2 duo laptop, you are likely to spend less just replacing it with another model and doing a clean Windows setup on it or same model that works and swap hard drives into it.

Paying a tech to fix a laptop not worth $200 is not a good use of money.

I would imagine the ribbon that connects the display to the mobo is failing, or the screen itself is just dying. The external monitor still working indicates this also..

Hey beezy
thanks alot for the prompt reply
the laptop screen is working normally when connected to an external monitor i.e both the laptop and the external monitor are displaying the screen.
but when i disconnect the monitor laptop display doesn turn on
i got a display problem fixed about an yr ago
So like u suggested i am guessing it could be an issue with display cable of laptop
Thanks again for the reply
i think its time to go to the hardware guy

Thats pretty weird, it works flawlessy as long as an external monitor is connected...i know this is a LONG shot, but maybe some bug is causing this.

Hook up both monitors, go to resolution settings, set it do display the laptop as main, and if you can disable the second monitor do that, then unplug external, see if the laptop screen stays on.
