I just began dualbooting Zorin OS (linux distro based on ubuntu) alongside windows 8.1. The only issue I have is that MKV files will not have any picture when they play, only audio. I've tried VLC and smplayer. Does anybody have any ideas on how to fix this? When I play the same file with Windows VLC everything works perfectly.

VLC has matroska as a compile time option. Zorin must have disabled it to save memory or something. I would give MPV a try. Newer versions of smplayer are supposed to be able to act as a frontend for it too, but I would try with plain MPV first. If that doesn't work, you may have to try using a PPA or compiling it yourself. MPV is supposed to play everything under the sun, so I really hope they left in the matroska support.
