How or can I use a subwoofer with an older bookshelf receiver?

My circa 1996 Sony "Compact Hi-Fi Stereo System" (LBT-D570) is an old surround sound system I'm trying to revive with Polk speakers and a Pioneer subwoofer. Obviously there are jacks on the receiver for speakers but other than that, the only other jacks are marked "surround speakers only".
What'll happen if I hook the subwoofer into this jack?

Thanks.

OK, well the good news is you could connect the sub via the speaker wires. Bad news is there is no pass through for satellite speakers. I think what you are going to have to do is use the headphone jack on the front with a cable that splits to RCA plugs and then use the level control on the back of the subwoofer to balance it with the rest of the system. These parts just don't have very good compatibility....

Post the model of the subwoofer and I can confirm my answer.

You're right, "compatibility" is something I should have considered when I decided to try and resurrect the shelf system. But I am going to give your suggestion a shot; a reference to the SW-8 model I found online agrees with you. Thanks for the information.
