hi,, I recently bought a Yamaha rx v377 receiver and i want to get 5.1 audio from my pc. My PC is Old and do not have HDMI. But i have Asus Xonar DG sound card and currently using its optical out to connect to my receiver, hoping that it will give 5.1 output but it dosent work. I then googled and found out that Optical only supports 2 channel output, Hope i did that before buying that Receiver. But anyways i stuck with 2 channel now. My Old Logitech 5.1 Speakers was doing grate job with my Sound card. But now i have to buy a Graphics Card with HDMI. My Question is which Graphics Card will work for me? And will it solve my problem? and I am not into games and all, I only Watch Movies and thats why i never needed a graphics card before. I want Lowest possible option in terms of Cost.

Forgot to ask, does using Graphics card hdmi means that i have no use of asus xonar dg???

Solution
i'm running a 5.1 system out of my graphics card currently. it works fine.

hdmi > optical in audio quality as well when it comes to 5.1 (optical is compressed, hdmi is uncompressed)

a cheap graphics card is likely your best option. you should be able to use any of them with a hdmi output

something cheap like the $30 gt610 from evga or newer gt210 from gigabyte should likely work fine. you could also go with an amd card if you prefer.
you have the wrong soundcard for doing that. the xonar dg is more of a headphone and pc speaker card as it supports virtual surround (dolby headphone) and analog pc speakers. the cheap card you should have purchased was the xonar ds which has dts-connect or 5.1 compressed audio over optical or similar cards which have dts-c or ddl as they are meant to hook up to home theater systems and other devices.

you could also connect with a graphics card and hdmi as well. even a cheap graphics card with hdmi out should be able to work for this purpose and you could then just connect your monitor up to the other jack on it.

difference between hdmi and optical for 5.1? hdmi supports uncompressed audio while to get 5.1 on optical it needs to be compressed. this is why you saw it mentioned that optical supports 2.0 which is true in some cases but in others both products support dolby digital over optical which makes it 5.1 compliant.

if you used a graphics card to export sound to the receiver you would not be using your sound card for audio correct.

thanks a lot for a quick reply,
First of all i bought xonar dg 3 years back. and very disappointed to here that i will not able to use it anymore, i liked that card.
So I have to use on board audio then and have to uninstall xonar dg and its drivers. and since you mentioned about xonar ds, what will you suggest buying xonar ds or a graphics card?
and will Graphics card HDMI give really good surround sound

I guess i will go for gt210, actually i was reading about it but no one said about its capability to output audio through HDMI, may be its to dumb of me to expect that.
Thanks a lot ... really appreciated
