Hello,

I've been trying to help my brother set up a home theater system at his house using a Sony 5.1 A/V (probably an older version of this http://www.walmart.com/ip/Sony-5.1-Channel-A-V-Receiver-with-100W-Black/16489926, he's had it for a couple years) and I've run into a problem with the projector. The receiver was used with a 5.1 system in the past but always with a TV screen and not a projector. Right now I have hooked up the Blu-Ray, Wii and X-Box to the receiver and they work on a TV screen, but when I unhook the TV and try to use the projector (connected through RCA, video only so the surround sound will work) the projector shows nothing. The lamp is on but the image isn't coming from any of the devices.

The projector is very cheap and only has RCA inputs so they are limited to that, and on the back of the receiver there are "Video Out" RCA outputs and also a "Monitor" video only output. I have tried using both and neither of them make the projector put out an image from the Blu-Ray or other devices. The house was already wired for a 5.1 home theater system using a projector, so I was hoping it would just be a Plug & Play but it's not working so far.

What am I missing?

Thanks,
RS

Solution
taken from the receiver manual

"Video signals input to the HDMI IN jack can only be output from the HDMI TV OUT jack. The video input signals cannot be output from the VIDEO OUT jacks or MONITOR OUT jacks."

amazing how manuals have some good info... :)

It's probably because of the cheap projector.A decent projector should have more inputs than just RCA.Here is a quite decent one from Epson:

Not sure why you indicate a specific model of receiver yet fail to mention anything about the device that you are actually having issue with. It makes it pretty hard to provide any useful directions. Don't take it wrong, most posts on this forum are the same.

Having said that... to rule out wiring, take the projector down and move it closer to the source using short / known working cables.

Basically, your likely issue is either bad cabling, wrong inputs, or wrong setup. The last two are hard to troubleshoot without knowing what the device is.

It is possible that the receiver doesn't output hdmi signals onto the rca video monitor out.

Budwich,

Thanks for the response. I understand what you're saying. Unfortunately I don't know anything about the projector except that it was a very cheap Black Friday acquisition from last year (I think). I know it's extremely cheap and probably worthless but before I tell them to buy a nicer one I'd like to at least make sure that's the issue. It's some no-name probably China-made plastic piece of junk. It weighs about 10 oz (not really, but it's definitely not heavy). I'll try to get some details on it today.

I will get some other RCA cables and hook directly to the projector from the Blu-Ray or Wii and see what happens. I didn't have any with me at the time so I couldn't do it when i was there. The cables were already routed through the ceiling/walls because the family that lived there before used a receiver/projector system as well so I'm guessing they are good but I'll make sure.

Thanks,
RS

see my updated to my initial response. further most bluray players these days don't have rca vids out. The wii should work. Further, on the receiver, if there is no scaling /conversion in the receiver, it is then likely that "what goes in comes out the same".... so hdmi in means only hdmi out, and rca video in, rca video out.

Ahh. That could be it. Obviously it's not an extremely expensive receiver. So if that's the case then the only thing that might work with the projector through the A/V is the Wii because it can output RCA? I will have to try that as well.

Does this mean that I will have to run multiple cables from the A/V to the projector in order to get the proper outputs? (HDMI for Blu-Ray, RCA for Wii and so on)

Thanks again,
RS

You're a boss :)

Ok well that simplifies things. Sort of anyway. So I will need a long HDMI to get from the A/V to a new projector (that has HDMI input) to use the Blu-Ray. Also since I'm using the 5.1 system from the A/V I only need to plug the RCA video input into the projector right (to use the Wii)? If I were to hook up the red/white wouldn't it try to play the audio over the projector's speakers?

Thanks!

or just buy a hdmi to rca video converter box for $20 to take the hdmi output from the receiver and send it rca vid to the projector.

I wouldn't use / worry about using the speakers in the projector unless your "tin ears" are really tin...:)

If I had the converter box what would happen to my Composites from the Wii? Would I have to physically change the RCA cables at the projector? The boxes that I'm seeing from a quick Google search only have 1 HDMI ---> 1 RCA output, but I need the Wii RCA as well...

of course, its more complex than that but since your overall description of your entire layout is "nebulous" at best, the answers are equally "nebulous"... :)

Basically, you said you have rca video going from your receiver to the projector (in wall). I said, get an hdmi converter box to convert the hdmi signals out of your receiver to rca vid to then connect to that wire. Of course, you only have one rca connected SSSOOOOO if you want more rca signals to go into the wire, you either need to unplug and plug in the other rca source when needed (this is a "manual" switch)... or you need a rca switch box that switches from one rca to another rca just like what the receiver does for the hdmi and rcas that it handles. Nothing is elegant since you are dealing with lots of "stuff" that wasn't exactly "planned". But as some one in my household always says, "it is what it is"... of course, she does not like it when she can't figure out what source is going where, when, and how... :) I say "it is what it is" until someone finds a whole lot more money and installation time ... :)
