I have N5010 15R dell laptop with ATI radeon HD 5470. GPU is heating up more than CPU and in minutes laptop crashes.

One more thing I noticed was fan of my laptop starts on startup and then just stops working.

I opened my laptop cleaned up everything and used Arctic Mx-4 on both GPU and CPU.

Its been better after cleanup but still facing issue with fan and GPU heatup.

Any clue what needs to be done? I am all hands down on any repairs.

Solution
For your fans, you could download notebook fans I thinks its called which will allow you to control how fast the fans spins. To check the temps you can use hwmonitor or real temp.

It doesnt help that ATI already is very hot. Also the fact that your fan isnt working, doesnt help either. Unless you can find some fan replacement, I believe your best choice would be too get a laptop cooler, or a vacuum laptop cooler like these.
1. http://www.coolermaster.com/mobile/notepal-series/notepal-x3/
2.http://www.amazon.com/DreamSky-Portable-Cooling-Powered-Notebook/dp/B00MVRBOIC
The vacuum really is more helpful when the fan helps. SO ya, take your pick. However if you can find a replacement laptop fan thats probably better.

Hey Atrix thanks for your reply. Cooling fan works fine on load but after load it stops. I think its because of some settings may be. ie, if CPU / GPU temperature is at certain level kick in the fan or something of that sort.

I am trying to figure out if theres any setting of this sort. If theres any how can i override it to keep cooling fan running consistently.

If this wont work then may be i would like to try and research what device or sensor keeps track of temperature of unit and inform fan unit to kick in. May be that have gone bad. I am just trying to narrow down my problem and see what are possible options.

Thank you for link to amazon product that cooler looks great i think that might help me for time being or may be forever :)

I own an N5010 myself, but my temps are more than fine. I haven't done anything out of the ordinary, i just clean the heatsink really well, apply copper based thermal paste and screw it back on.

In your case, it could be a problem with the heat sensors, it is only a guess. Also, make sure that you update your BIOS to version A15.

Install HWMonitor and monitor the temps for a while, both in idle and while gaming.

hi victor Thanks again for helping out. This is exactly what I was looking for. How can I know/find the heat sensors and replace it? Is there any online video or ref material that I could follow and do it on own?

Dell website is so confusing for BIOS update. I'm not sure how to update BIOS. It is kind of risky for me as of now since my system is rebooting or shutting down right after 2-5 mins of runtime. And sometimes it wont start at all with 8 beeps.

Now I'm not getting what is causing all this issues.

Possible causes can be one of following:

Battery - Power supply causing issue. - Replaced one from amazon (not from dell)

System overheat - (Causing GPU to stop working giving no signal to LCD causing 8 beeps) - Cleaned fan, heatsink, replaced thermal paste with new one.

BIOS - As of now I havent checked BIOS version or any detail of that sort.

CMOS battery - sometime on startup i get 5 beeps but then everything works fine on subsequent startups. date time is being saved so i believe its not CMOS issue.
