My Toshiba Satellite L15 laptop is frozen on the "Shutting Down" screen

My laptop is fairly new. I've had it for a little over three months; which means the free tech support has expired (go figure). I bought it knowing that I use my laptop basically all day every day, and even then the people at Best Buy said it should last me three or four years without problems. I take good care of it, keep it clean, shut it down every night, update it when necessary, and protect it with Viper.
I attempted to shut it down about a week ago, closed the lid, went to bed. When I woke up and turned it on it was still stuck on the shutting down screen. It's been like that since. I've let the battery die then turned it on again. Held the power button for ten seconds. I would pull the battery out and force it to shut down but I have no open access to the battery to remove it. No dice with any of these; it's still not working.
Please help! It's extremely inconvenient, and I feel like I'm missing a limb.

If you hold in the power button it should do a hard shut down. What happens after you do that and turn it back on again? Does it just come up to that shutting down screen or does it get stuck at the same shutting down screen after you use it and try to turn it off. The other thing, when you shut it down, wait for it to shut down before you close the lid.

It should have a one year warranty, contact Toshiba not Best Buy.
