Our Samsung tv only has RCA connections for audio components while our new LG soundbar has HDMI and optical options for connecting to a tv. Has anybody used a HDMI to RCA cable before with success? I thought my tv had an optical connection so I didn't anticipate any problems when I purchased the soundbar. Thank you.

You can't use a HDMI to RCA cable. Doesn't work at all except for special applications. If your TV has ARC out via HDMI you can use an audio extractor like this one
http://www.amazon.com/ViewHD-Extractor-Support-Converter-VHD-H2HARC/dp/B00LKF6CPG
If your TV has analog audio outputs (not inputs) then you can use an ADC like this one
http://www.amazon.com/SANOXY%C2%AE-Analog-Digital-Converter-Adapter/dp/B005F20756/ref=pd_sim_23_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=0HT2H5S2J8KHB40MQ7FW
if your soundbar doesn't have an analog aux input.
