The laptop is a HP Compaq nw8440 mobile workstation. It was working fine yesterday, but when I go to turn it on now, all I get is the fan spinning (no speed scaling, full power only), power LED is on, mute LED is on. DVD drive whirrs to check for disk twice (but only does it once when it it working). Screen does not even turn on, no backlight even, and no output from the VGA port.

I tried removing the CMOS battery and then putting it back to no avail.

What should I do now?

And don't say "get a new laptop that thing is rubbish" because it's had a RAM upgrade and an SSD in it and now it's half decent.

If you tried reseating ram and that did not work try original ram. Next then is bios battery ck full voltage of battery next is usually bios itself try replacing if possible. I suspect bios is bad as it tells what in system to start though on board video could be the culprit but usually it is the bios. (embedded chip is difficult to replace) OPTIONS USED MOTHERBOARD OR NEW LAPTOP

OK so I tried it with both known working RAM and known working CMOS battery with everything non-essential disconnected to no avail. I also tried with a known working CPU, and tried my CPU in another known working laptop. Both CPUs work in the known working laptop and neither does in my laptop so that rules out CPU as an issue too.
