My laptop's screen randomly died, it turned white/black and then it powered off, I noticed a burning plastic smell coming out of the exhaust so I checked the back of the laptop to feel if it was hot and it was not. I decided to hook the laptop to one of my other monitors to see if it was still running and it still does, just the screen won't work

Solution
you need a new videocable. what happened is the opening & shutting of the laptop screen caused the cable to rub against that snr plate which is part of the hinge assembly to cause it to fray. when you get the new cable, reinforce that part of the cable with electrical tape & put some of that tape on the side of that snr plate that rubs against the cable. if you are going to still use that laptop then disconnect the cable from the motherboard & insert that cable to sit above the white ribbon cable at the bottom of your 1st picture.

It could be any number of things. Motherboard, screen, connection....

as you noticed burning plastic smell coming out of the exhaust of the base part of the laptop then the screen itself might be alright. open up the laptop base to locate the video cable from motherboard to screen on left hand side to see if it is damaged at all.

The screen turned white/black
It powered off
You smell burning plastic

And you continue to play games on it with an external monitor.

You really, really need to find the exact problem and fix it.
