I have an old pc sitting around and i want to give it to my mom so she can use it as an HTPC.

I have a couple of issues though. The pc i have doesn't have an HDMI connection so i will be using VGA to plug into her TV. Which leaves me with the issue of sound.

She has a bunch of speakers that is part of her POS dvd player. I want to use the speakers she already has but im not sure how to connect them.

They connect through bare wire into the back of the DVD player. My problem is that i don't know all of the technical terms for audio. I need to know what size the standard pc audio ports are and if there are adapters for bare wire to connect to a pc audio port

Perhaps someone can recommend an adapter to buy if it even exists?

The speakers as you describe them can't be connected directly to the PC because they are passive and need the amplification of the main unit. If that has an aux input you can connect the green audio jack from the PC to it. The HTS may have 2 RCA jacks or the same mini jack as the PC so you need the correct cable.

Oh, and you want a newer card with HDMI anyway. Quality is higher and the cables aren't as touchy. I was having awful display issues with a recent build that turned out to be the fact that the VGA cable was being bent around the cabinet. (Unfortunately the only usable spare video card I have lying around is a GeForce 8400, so...)
