Had this problem for around 6 months, today it annoyed me so much I decided to try and get it sorted.

What happens?
- The touchpad works for around 2 - 3 hours, as it normally would.
- Every 2-3 hours the touchpad starts playing up, if I move down for example it will just wiggle randomly on the screen. It just moves in random directions.
- When it's playing up, I have noticed if I hover my finger about 1 cm above the touchpad it will also move the cursor randomly.

The weird temporary fix
- To stop this happening I have to rotate my laptop by 90^o so that the screen is flat with my desk and the keyboards going into the air for about 4-5 seconds and then when I put the laptop down it doesn't do it any more.

Fixes I have tried:
- Reinstalling ELAN pointing device
- Reinstalling Lenovo's power management utility

So the questions I have are:
- What could this be?
- Is it a hardware problem?
- Are there any fixes?

Solution

That's often a sign that it's something that needs inspected/serviced (I mean hardware). If you have a warranty, then yeah, I would say explain it to Lenovo and see what they can do for it; don't risk - or void - your warranty.

Opening up the laptop is last resort really, as I imagine it will void the warranty on it. Can't seem to find anyone else who's had the issue either - It's a strange one.

Lenovo warranty has ran out, but the 2 year John Lewis warranty is still active. I'll take it up with them. Thanks.

Recently I had some issues with touch pad like all of sudden touch pad stops responding.
Symptoms - Left side button not work, touch failed and no pointer can be moved using touch pad.

However when i connect external mouse then everything working fine, so I realized driver is faulty for the touch pad, as my laptop was in warranty so Lenovo technician took over control through remote access and fix the driver issue and now there is no issues at all.
