Non-Gaming Laptop buy SSD separately?

Hello,

I am in the market for a new laptop for my wife. I use a desktop and have a laptop from work.. She's using a 6 year old HP laptop.

She uses her computer for general browsing, word processing and downloading pictures from her camera (no heavy editing).

I would appreciate recommendations on a 15 inch laptop which includes an optical drive, 1080 resolution (ideally, not 100% sold that this is needed). I would like it to have an SSD since I love the one on my desktop, but I would be willing to buy that separately and install it. (300gb+)

Budget is roughly $700-800 USD.

It is generally cheaper to buy a laptop with a hard drive (HDD) and purchase a SSD separately. However, that means you need to go through the steps of cloning the HDD to the SSD, then swapping them in the laptop. You would need to buy a USB to mSATA cable (~$10 - $15) to connect the SSD to the laptop to perform the cloning process.

The plus side is that you now have a 2.5" hard drive that you can use as an external HDD, but you would need to purchase an enclosure for it to keep it protected. But in a pinch you can use the USB to mSATA cable.
