As a gamer, should I bother with antivirus?

Hey guys,

So this question has always been on my mind but i've never really got around to asking it.
On my PC, all i do is game. I only use clients like Steam and Origin and that's all, no web browsing, buying stuff or anything. In fact except for when i first install windows i never use the browser at all and all I get is stuff like Ccleaner, Msi afterburner, Razer game boost, Steam ect. That it.
I was wondering if i really should bother as i don't want anything to slow down my PC at all at any time in game.

Also just as a side question, Is it actually possible to get a virus from joining a custom sever in a game such as Garry's Mod where you have to download extra content??

Thanks in advance.

Solution
Virus from game platform or server, never had it in my life. (Steam, Battlenet, Origin, etc.)

Completely without anti virus, better not.
Internet is one dangerous place if you do not have antiviral programs (incl. anti malwares, etc.).
Data exchange between friends via USB sticks is already quite dangerous.

Activate live protection, turn off planned/scheduled scan processes and do it manually about once a month.

Seems like you don't need it.

However, personally i would get Malware Bytes which does a scan when it wants it to. Make sure to turn it off on startup.
Do a scan once every month or so just to make sure your PC is clean.

Thanks man,

I know it sounds like a stupid question but have you ever had experience with or heard of someone recieving a virus from a game sever?

I believe it's possible, although I've never experienced it, neither have my friends. But I am sure it's possible.

As the person above already mention, for your case having Malwarebytes free scanner on standby is all you need since your not using your browser. Gamers are a target to keyloggers to steal their game login account so have Malwarebytes to remove it if you suspect it, especially the high risk downloading some mod or game from websites not very well known.

Thanks to everyone who's posted. I think il just grab malwarebytes and run it once a month and keep it off when i dont use it.
