If you could get the best gaming laptop or the best gaming pc in the world (you can't sell it or something) what should you choose? The laptop or the pc?

Actually, part of that is based on what you use and already have.

Personally, I would go for the laptop - as long as I could choose the model and configuration.

I have both gaming laptop and gaming desktop computers. My desktop runs 3 x 1080p monitors and can manage very high settings on all 3 monitors or ultra settings running one monitor for 95% of the games out now.

My laptop runs a 1080p screen that is TN and can only manage high settings while making sounds like a hamster on speed is running inside it. Plus, it is an HP laptop that insists on making hard drive access noises through an on-board speaker while using its SSD (even when running Linux or installing Windows).

yeah, but you know there are gaming laptops out there that have 2 (yes 2) nvidia geforce GTX 980's with both 4gb Vram, meaning the laptop has 8vram. Thats enough for all the games to run on max settings smoothly 60fps.

OK.
And then next year, when you want to change a component?

Are there high performing laptops? Sure. But the best performing laptop still falls short of the best performing desktop.

You asked for opinions. That was mine.

Not sure what you're asking here.
It won't cost $1,500 to upgrade a desktop.
