About six months ago I received my first HyperX Cloud headset. I was pretty excited as I got it $30 off normal price and thought it might be a decent headset, but I ran into some issues. The first pair had bad low range quality and a Hz gap at around 3.8KHz to 4.1KHz. For the low range, it had almost no bass and would put out hardly any noise until about 450Hz. For the gap, it would be ascending normally in db until it hit 3.8KHz then drop in db (if it was at -30 db, it would drop to -70 db) and ascend back up at 4.1KHz. The right driver was the worst while the left driver would drop 2/3 less (-30 db at 3.8KHz drop to -45 db).

So I called Kingston and had an RMA done. Three weeks later and I have my second set. Good news is the bass issue was gone. Bad news is it had almost the exact same Hz gap, but at 3.7KHz to 3.9KHz. RMA was done again, but it was the same story with the third set, but now it's at 3.5KHz to 3.8KHz. Both headsets right drivers were worse than the left drivers.

I will admit that this was tested with lesser quality equipment (phone EQ and internet range generator). However, even without using test equipment it was still noticeable when listening to that range. I got the same results on all three headsets when using them on my desktop motherboard built-in sound card, desktop front audio ports, Asus RoG G73JH, and HP Spectre X360.

Kingston doesn't have anything further they can tell me as they don't know what the issue is after two RMAs. Does anyone know what could be causing this issue?

makes sense given the frequency curve of the takstar pro 80 (which the hyper x cloud is based on). it certainly is not uncommon for headphones and headsets to have such curves or peculiarities.

my guess would be that the bass issue was just a defective product while the dropout is just driver design. you...

Thanks so much for the detailed response and helpful links. Makes sense now why the drivers have the drop. Based on how they sound and the chart, I'll be returning the headphones permanently this time. I'd rather not have to deal with an EQ for these, especially as the left driver won't need as much correction as the right. It looks like I've got a fair bit of research to do before picking out my next set.

for the price, the takstar pro 80's (and HXC) are really good compared with other "headsets" you can buy. however, with that said it doesnt mean they suit everyone as we each have our own preferences for audio.

while there are always going to be some valleys and humps in frequency response curves, you might enjoy the hd518->598 series a bit more. the ad500->900x series also has a flatter upper response however cuts off severely on bass.

if possible listen at your local stores, but that is not always possible. remember, you can always convert any headphones into a headset with a modmic (or cheaper moovmic or clip on)
