I am using the ASUS Xonar DGX sound card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829132052
and a Onkyo TX-SR500: http://www.onkyousa.com/Products/model.php?m=TX-SR500&class=Receiver

I am attempting to get surround sound working through these devices. I have my sound system plugged into the sound card through an optical cable. This sound system works with a coaxial output from my tv (by connecting HDMI from graphics card to tv and coax from tv to sound system) but for whatever reason, refuses to work with this optical cable. I have the drivers installed for the sound card. When I look in Playback Devices in sound settings, while running music, S/PDIF Pass-through Device indicates that sound is running through it. But the sound system produces no sound. It is set as default device. I can confirm the sound card is working by testing the green auxiliary jack with my headphones. Please help and thank you.

Using the software that comes with your card, ensure that speakers are set to 5.1. Also, make sure that Dolby digital live is ticked too.

Then on pc sound panel (bottom right) ,ensure that the speaker selected for default is the sound card device "asus xonar dx audio device" make sure that this is set as default NOT SPDIF Output. Then right click on SPDIF output and ensure Dolby Digital, so that's "SPDIF out", "properties", "supported formats" then ensure Dolby Digital IS selected/ticked.

Then in the game sound settings, make sure that you select home "cinema surround system", dont select stereo enhancement.

I don't know why, but I cannot open the Xonar DGX Audio Center program at all. I cannot find a download that would be an alternative. I'm using Windows 10 so maybe that's conflicting? The only install options were for XP, 7, and Vista.

Something weird happened. I set the default device to the "ASUS Xonar DGX Audio Device" speakers and the surround sound was working (very faintly). The rear speakers were very quiet but audible. It only worked while I was playing GTA V and when I exited the game, it suddenly stopped outputting any audio.
