So I'm looking for a laptop to get my girlfriend for her birthday. I wanted to get her something smaller (not a 15.6 inch) She's not a power user by any means, just writing papers and Netflix. Anyways I bought an HP Stream 11 360 2 in 1 that was on sale for $199. After I bought it I'm wondering if I should return it for something better, as only 2 gigs of ram seems too little these days and celerons are meh. Willing to spend up to $300. What would you pick? Thanks!

For that price you are very limited, mostly to Chromebooks and the Stream systems. Unless you get a refurbished system. Lenovo X220 refurbished on Newegg are under $300 and are very good systems. Way better than a new Chromebook or Stream.

If you want a new system and don't want a low end CPU, need to go over $300.

You are not going to get anything much better for $300 unless you look at a used laptop. 13" laptops are generally expensive because they are offer a good balance between performance and portability so they generally have Core i3 or better CPUs and are much more expensive than $300. The least expensive 13" laptop is the Asus UX305 which sells for $700 and has a Core M 5Y10 CPU.

If a 15.6" laptop is acceptable, then you can buy the following Dell for $300 which has a Core i3-4030u CPU which is going to be a lot more powerful than any $300 11.6" laptop.
