So only a almost a year ago I had bought a pair of Plantronics Gamecom 380 Headsets.

I had managed to break the internal microphone around April and contacted Plantronics support, who had given me a new pair of Gamecom 380s, which once again in around 5 months time I had the same problem - and this time I won't be able to do anything about it through warranty.

Since receiving a second pair, I had taken much better care of it - I never recall dropping or smashing it on the floor, the coils were never tangled. After usage I pull the cords out of my PC and place them in the plastic container that was in the packaging. Though I do know a few times I had run the cords over with my chair after managing getting stuck underneath but this was a rare occurrence.

I can still hear sound through my headsets (previous and current). Is there anything I've been doing wrong that leads to my microphones breaking so easily?

likely just a case of poor quality product. build quality issues are common issues for gaming headsets.

for now you could just disconnect the microphone (or not use it) and get a clip on microphone. the modmic, moovmic, zalman zm1 (or other lavalier style microphones) would all clip on your headphone or cable and allow you to use the headset as a headst (but with a new mic).

Likely the only thing you did wrong was pick that headset over something much better. If you check the reviews, your issue happens to be the main reason why people give it poor reviews. Hell, http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/980447-REG/sennheiser_504583_universal_head_band_headset_with.html is the same price but has much, much better reviews.

For now, you should consider a separate mic or complain about the design defect to the manufacturer.
