First run this fix it from Microsoft to reset the Windows Update function then try running your Windows 10 update after.

While the PC is doing it's update, do not use the laptop until if finish the update. Close all other process while doing the update. If possible connect the laptop thru wired connection to be sure that the download and update process won't be interrupted.

Thank you, Laptop Nerd, for the info. As it happened, last night the normal MS 2nd Tuesday update did process, though it took a long time. My computer now is working much better, not hanging up with file explorer and the update does show as it did before the recent problem.
