Hi!

I've been given a laptop by a friend as the sound no longer works. A local guy offered to upgrade the laptop to Windows 10, but installed an evaluation copy and deleted the recovery partition. Windows 10 soon wanted a legitimate install so I had to go for a clean copy of Win7 Pro 64b for now. The sound stopped working since this person installed Win10 eval.

Symptoms:
- Red cross on sound, says no sound output installed
- Device manager has a yellow exclamation mark next to 'High Definition Audio Device'.

Here's what I've done:
- Manually installed Audio driver from Dell website
- Searched Ven/Dev values in Google and downloaded driver that was recommended
- Reinstalled Again, with Windows 8 this time! Same problem/symptoms. Tried updating driver through device manager, but it said the best driver is already installed.

I'm now starting to think, could this be a coincidental hardware issue? I feel like I've eliminated everything it could be.

Thanks

I'm confused. You were given the laptop that the sound no longer works. This was before upgrading to Win 10. Then you say the sound didn't work since upgrading to Win 10.

I think it's a hardware issue from before you got the laptop. Is it possible that the audio is disabled in bios

Sorry, should have been clearer. The sound stopped working since the person upgraded to Win10 eval.

It certainly worked before this, which is why it must be a coincidence if it's a hardware issue. Just checked bios, no setting for disabling audio.
