Streaming movies from external HDD

I've been converting my DVD collection to MP4 using Wonderfox. I put them on a brand new Toshiba Canvio II external hard drive to watch movies from the hard drive on a Vizio smart TV through the USB port on the TV. The issue I'm having is that on some movies the video appears to stutter or pause ever so slightly on a consistent pattern during playback. It's more noticeable in scenes where the is a fly-by shot or someone walking around. Any idea what could cause this? Is it the transfer rate or something else?

Its very likely the frame rate that its recorded at vs what your TV displays. First thing I would do is turn off any motion smoothing. Secondly double check the framerate the file was converted at. The other thing is the speed of the USB port which may not be quick enough depending on the resolution of the video.

Do the movies stutter when they are on your C drive? Do they stutter when on the external drive but still played through the computer? If the answer is no to both of those than the problem is the TV not being able to handle the file, possibly the codecs you used.

edit: after a quick look at some of the Vizio manuals I noticed this warning on some of them. "The player is not designed to play media from external hard drives, mp3 players, cameras or smartphones." All the illustrations reference USB sticks not external hard drives. That might be your problem.

Thanks for the answers so far, they prompted me to check a few things. I put the same movie on a flash drive and disabled the motion smoothing features on the TV and the same issue is present. It doesn't stutter in a hugely noticeable way. For example, the movie I noticed it in was Star Wars. When the words at the beginning run across the screen you can see a very slight pause every two seconds or so. That continues during live action in the movie when people are walking, ships are flying, etc. I'm going to check the frame rate issue and the codec (which was set at smartfit), but I hope that's not the issue cause I've converted most of my DVD collection at this point and would hate to have to redo it all.
