I've seen somewhat related problems, but nothing that actually corresponds to my problem. This is a several months old PCG-81212M, and when booting up, after about 1-2 seconds after the screen is enabled (you see the VAIO logo), the screen goes blank. The only way I have been able to get it back is to press the DISPLAY OFF button, then any key, which will then enable the monitor for - you guessed it - 1-2 seconds. This is independent of OS, and the machine is operating just fine, since you can attach an external monitor, which works fine.

I have taken off the top cover and sprayed liberally with compressed air, just in case there was an issue with dust, with no change. I cannot see any visible signs of corrosion or damage to any components.
Operatiing on battery, AC, and AC without a battery installed makes no difference.
Any ideas?

Hi,

If it works fine with an external monitor that actually narrows down the problem to the built in display. Try updating the graphics card driver first.
- Connect the laptop to an external display.
- Go to Device Manager then uninstall the graphics card driver.
- Reboot your laptop so it would reinstall the driver automatically after the reboot but if it doesn't download and install the graphics card driver from Sony support site
- https://esupport.sony.com/US/p/model-home.pl?mdl=PCG812&template_id=1&region_id=1&tab=download#/downloadTab
- Reboot your laptop once again after the driver has been installed.

This would make sense if the behavior was OS (windows) specific, but this happens as soon as the machine is turned on, during POST, long before the windows bootstrap is loaded from the hard drive (which afaik doesn't have any capability to recognize the device - last I checked the bootstrap loaders all use generic vesa). There could be an issue, I suppose, with the firmware, but I've yet to see anything anywhere that shows how one can verify and/or update the firmware for this laptop.
