After startup (running windows 7) system freezes up and takes a hard shutdown to get going again. Am I missing drivers or something? At a loss for what to do next.

Freezing is usually software related. Rarely is it a hardware fault.

Have you noticed any pattern (specific programs/tasks, specific intervals, etc.)?

press f8 and enable boot logging. When it freezes, reboot using f8 and see if you can enter safge mode. Once there you can examine the log and system event viewer should help narrow it down too.
