Hi,
If it's still freezing in safe mode that could be one indication that the HDD might be failing. Load the PC in BIOS and see if it still freezes in there because if does not it should be the HDD but if still does freeze in BIOS it could either be that your laptop is overheating or the motherboard is faulty already. In BIOS you can run a SMART TEST were it will test your HDD and will give you an error message if it's bad already.
Here's an HP document on how to run SMART TEST and normally steps here applies to most BIOS.
