what is the difference in a 4gb 920m and 2gb 840m??most of the fifth gen i7 comes at a dual core with 4 virtual cores. Unlike the fourth gen i7 which comes with a quad core at a specified price range of 70-80k INR ..I will only be using them for gaming at mid or high level at 1080p mostly or 1366*768.....

Solution
While the 920m is a newer nVidia chip, it is less powerful than the slightly older 840m. The performance of the 920m is somewhere between the 825m and 830m.

For gaming purposes the amount of dedicated video RAM (4GB vs 2GB) is meaningless for weak GPUs. GPUs can use a lot of RAM when playing games at high resolution and when using very high quality textures. But weak GPUs like the 820m and 940m are not powerful to allow you to play games at 1920x1080 with maxed out graphics unless you want your game to look like a slide show (or the game has extremely low graphic requirements like LoL / CSGO). 4GB of video RAM is more or less meaningless for anything below a GTX 960m (or it's Radeon equivalent).

As for the 4th gen vs. 5th gen Core i7...

840, with nVidia cards, the first number is the generation and second/third the model, simply put, they higher the better performing, regardless of ram size.

For example, a 570 can out perform a 920, even though it is older tech.

As for the 4th gen vs. 5th gen Core i7 CPU.... while a quad core CPU is nice to have games are primarily limited by the GPU. Games will easily run better on a dual core 5th gen Core i7 and the 840m than it would on a quad core 4th gen Core i7 and the 920m because of the performance difference between the 840m and the 920m.

Solution
There is hardly any difference in performance between 4th and 5th gen CPUs. CPU performance increases since Sandy Bridge (2nd) has been relatively small. Assuming the same clockspeed and number of cores the average performance increase based on numerous benchmarks are as follows

2nd gen - 3rd gen = 6%
3rd gen - 4th gen = 6%
4th gen - 5th gen = 5%

A 2.0GHz 5th gen CPU would be about equal to a 2.36GHz 2nd gen CPU. But compared to a 4th gen CPU it would only be about 2.1GHz.

Looking at the Intel processors the Duo core processors have a U the the product name example 5650U meaning these are processors used ijn Ultra devices where battery life, temperature and power efficiency are the main concern in design and not as much preformance. Now the quad cores are the one yoiu see in tradtional laptop cases not the ultrabooks. Power is more a concern and battery life, temp and effieciency aren't the as much a concern. So typically laptops with these processors get less battery life. Another thing about these the 4th & 5th generation Processors have integrated graphics The 4th generation HQ after the number 4950HQ the q stand for quad and the H for High perfomance graphics the Intel Iris. The MQ stand for Mobile Quad core. Basically in the 4th generation the High performance uses the Intel Iris graphics. The 5th generation MQ isn't used in the name of the processor as only HQ and U are used. So the name of the processor does make a difference also

A 5th generation i7 5950HQ is 200.00 more then the i7-5850HQ.

All these processors have Intel graphics integrated into the processor so the Nvidia is the discrete graphics card that has it own resource like memory

Both are class 2 level graphics cards so i would with mor memory
