Is my laptop's hard drive dead?

Solution
Hey there, Stephen7z!

If you have the Windows 8 install disk (or know someone who has) you can boot from it and use the Recovery/Repair options to try and fix the issue.
Click Repair your computer > Select Troubleshoot from Choose an option screen
Click Advanced options > Click on Command Prompt >
Type these following commands and hit enter after each line of command:
Bootrec /fixmbr
Bootrec /fixboot
Bootrec /scanos
Bootrec /rebuildbcd

Hopefully this will help you fix the BSOD.
Best of luck! :)

Seems to be the same problem. Posting #7 seems pretty straightforward:

1. Insert windows system dvd
2. Boot and choose recovery option.
3. Enter advanced recovery
4. Try automatic recovery (mine failed)
5. Go to advanced options and choose system prompt (DOS window)
6. Change to c:\windows\system32 ( whichever drive\folder your windows system is in )
7. Run BCDBOOT C:\WINDOWS
8. Restart system

First, reseat the hard drive. It's likely that the hard drive was damaged during the fall. If you can't get the system going with the recovery options, run a scan of the hard drive, there is sometimes a utility in the BIOS for that, or you can make a boot disk with drive check utilities like Ultimate Boot CD.
