Sony Vial laptop : VPCEG28FN/B IN5
I had problems with my laptop and gave it to Sony Service Center.
They mentioned problem with hard disk and it costs Rs. 10,000 to replace it.
Hard disk capacity needed is 500GB.
Kindly advise which one should i take.
Please note i am in India.
Is it possible that we could replace the hard disk on our own without approaching anyone?

Hi Baanravi,

I'm from India too. I'm having Sony VAIO VPCEB34EN. I also have Sony HD-E1 1TB external hard drive.

The ext. HDD is failing and I have to go to the service center three times and still they don't know what the problem is.
i know exactly what the problem is (the HDD has weak sectors (manufacturing defect) that it occasionally corrupts files).

If I say this to them, they ask me how do you know. When I reply I got this from Crystal Disk Info, HD Sentinel, etc (which were trusted by almost all the techies in he world) but they keep on saying third party programs can show fake info.

Now the third time, they got my HDD (saying you're our first customer with such issue) and kept with them or 2 days. Then after getting it, I'm...

Any 2.5" sata HDD should do. They sell for maybe 25-35 euros on Ebay on 500 GB side. Used HDDs. Not all international sellers would ship into India but I think many enough would.

Locally you can probably get one much cheaper.

With most laptops all you need to do is to unscrew the botton covers, the HDD is directly accessible under them. Remove battery, remove first few smaller covers, when the large botton cover should be possible to remove.

Actually it looks like it's directly under one of the smaller covers, page 3-3, HDD cover is number 31, HDD is 7.

They don't even have the correct technical staffs to serve. Total waste of time and travelling cost. I'm going to complain service head India and will never ever recommend Sony products to any of the person I know.

We should always purchase OEM products like WD, Seagate, Toshiba when it comes to hard disks because Sony doesn't make hard drives.

Since your laptop is a discontinued model, you won't be getting any good support from them.

I'm going to force open my external hard drive (out of warranty) and try using it as internal in my laptop.
