Hello all

I am looking at getting a new laptop for university.

Honestly I am not sure which brand is best for Laptops. If you could comment on customer service, build quality and personal experience in regards to Laptops from these two brands it would be hugely appreciated.

From my personal research it appears that Asus have much better cooling in their laptops which makes them weigh more, thus reducing their mobility score in multiple reviews.

The two laptops in question are below -

Asus - ASUS G751JL-T7028H http://www.notebookcheck.com/Asus-G751JL-T7028.146909.0.html

MSI - MSI GE72 2QE(Apache)-006UK http://www.notebookcheck.net/MSI-GE72-2QEi716H21BW.140556.0.html

They are the same price of £999

Thank you

I have personally owned an MSI gaming laptop and then an ASUS ROG back in 2014 and I can tell you, gaming performance wise, the ASUS is much better suited for that need.
However you're adding UNIVERSITY in that equation and carrying an sr-71 blackbird with you is no easy task =). Not to mention how you would look in class with such a massive computer.

Get the ASUS if you want a little more performance (won't throttle as much) or as a desktop replacement and/or for LAN parties
Get the MSI one if you want it for school and need mobility while keeping some gaming power.

Neither of those are going to have great cooling simply because they are slimmer laptops, thus smaller fans. I personally own a MSI GT70 and picked it over the equivalent Asus model despite Asus having 2 fans and the MSI having 1. MSI gives you a button that will max fan speed, obviously increasing noise, but cools quite well. My single fan cools as well as Asus ROG series dual fans, just louder.

What are your needs? Do you plan on using this as a gaming laptop as well?

As for companies, they both make excellent products. I always hear horror stories about Asus's RMA program, but I've also heard good things. MSI has a solid RMA program, but it can be lengthy.

I personally feel like MSI offers more bonuses. Steelseries keyboard is nice. The speakers on MSI laptops are hands down better than Asus by a significant margin.

Just remember that putting that hardware in a tiny form factor, you will have lots of heat you can't take care of.

Those bigger heatsinks on the asus do help a lot more than MSI's when it comes to gaming.

Have you seen the MSI heatsinks? I'm basing my comparisons off of the MSI GT70 and equivalent Asus ROG series laptops. All those videos, benchmarks, etc you see are very biased (clearly) towards MSI for some reason. Very, very few of them actually utilize MSI's fan button which maxes the fan speed. I've never ever seen a temp anywhere near benchmarks I saw of the GT72.

Yeah GT72 is great for cooling too, similar to ASUS no doubt.
Except he's choosing between MSI GE72 (Slim) and ASUS G751JL (Bulky)

I lied, I have a GT70 (single fan, bigger chassis versus the newer dual fan GT72).

The G751JL isn't bulky. Both are average sized laptops. The Asus looks much bigger due to the chassis design. Both are going to struggle actually keeping the system cool without a laptop cooling pad. That's a whole lot of hardware to fit in a regular/slim notebook. There's a reason why true "Gaming" laptops are 2 inches thick with the screen opened. I would personally still get the MSI after seeing several of the features. Don't get me wrong, Asus is incredible quality and I really do like their notebooks, but I lean towards MSI on gaming models.

How was the ASUS in regards to cooling?

To be honest, carrying a heavy laptop is not an issue as long as it can fit in my bag.

Thanks for your comment.

Never had an issue with it. Dual exhaust in the back kept things cool all the time. I believe both the CPU and GPU have their own heatsink, which is a big plus too. (My MSI had 1 fan and heatsink for both the CPU and GPU, not sure if that is the case for the one you listed there)
I even went as far as overclocking my GPU with the ASUS ROG and I didn't run into temperature issues. Depending on how long you keep your laptop, you're eventually going to want to Overclock it (if possible) to extend its gaming lifetime

At first reading your input, I was like "I'm not even looking at that laptop", however after having a look I am going to purchase a MSI GT72

Thanks!
