Laptop to Projector to Surround Sound

My son is trying to hook up a newer laptop with an older projector (which we did via a HDMI to DVI cable.) He has surround sound hooked up to the projector.. but when he tries to use the laptop to watch a movie he can only get sound that comes out of the laptop nothing comes from the Surround Sound. What can we do if anything to get his surround sound to work.

If you need more info I can try to give it but I dont know much about this stuff.

A
Unlike HDMI which carries both video and audio DVI only carries video. You will need to connect the laptop audio to the projector or HT system with another cable. If there is an audio input that is associated with the DVI input on the projector you can use that.
