I had the AGPtek converter connected once and everything worked. When I selected TV on my receiver the TV would play thru my Stereo speakers. I had to disconnect it and when I reconnected it it doesn't work. I'm not sure my current connections are correct. I have a HDMI TV and DVD blueray and I'm using an HDMI to HDMI + Audio ( SPDIF + L/R ) converter box.

If you have the DVD connected to the HDMI extractor box and that connected to the TV with HDMI and the receiver with RCA audio cables you would only get sound from the DVD.
If your converter is compatible with and connected to the HDMI(ARC) input on of the TV (and ARC is turned on) then that it may only produce digital audio not analog (unless the instructions say otherwise).
If you want sound from the TV (and the DVD) you would need a digital to analog converter like this one

Sounds like that was your previous hookup.
