Which is the better PC speaker connection: 3.5 mm audio or USB?

I am looking for a new set of PC desktop speakers. I own an excellent Plantronics USB headset used to record and play back my voiceovers as well as mix my own music in Audition 2.0 (don't laugh).

However, my current (cheap 3.5mm) speakers experience distortion - low vibrating hum whenever turned on.

A friend recommended I buy a 2.1 set that uses a USB plug instead. I am not looking for a high end surround sound, just something to play back music while working in a home office.

Is there a difference in sound quality, distortion, etc. based on connection (3.5mm or USB), or is this simply a matter of cheaper vs better quality speakers/wiring?

I'd appreciate any insights/discussion/advice.

i would plug the cheap speakers into another device to see if they hum with that device or if it is with the pc only. it could also be ground loop possibly as well.

could be one of a few things...

-poor soundcard inside your pc
-poor quality speakers/amp
-ground loop.

Thank you both for your input.
I ultimately purchased a new Logitech z506 5.1 surround sound set for my PC.

The sound is great. However, there is still a rhythmic low static hum that sounds like helicopter rotors in the distance. This is the same distortion I had with my previous speaker set.

To troubleshoot, I turned off the computer and unplugged the jacks. The static was still coming from all speakers, but barely noticeable unless I turned up the volume to full.

I then removed all other electrical equipment (an LED desk lamp, Sony docking station/radio, monitor, and Trip Lite surge suppresser) from around the subwoofer and the static disappeared.

Once I placed the subwoofer on a shelf further away from all other electrical devices I am fine - no distortion, static, hum.

Thank you all again for your advice.
