Internal, built-in speakers do not work. External speakers connected to the audio-out jack do work

I have performed ALL of the tests from the HP support site; no help:
http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01912228
including the basic tests such as default speakers, etc.

Note that I have attempted to update the driver: Realtek High Definition Audo.
The result is "The best driver software for your device is already installed"

Solution
If external speakers work okay then there is nothing wrong with Windows settings or the audio driver, they are all okay.

The internal speakers themselves are broken, possibly one or more speaker wires have become detached or snapped off.

Or the "switch-over" clip inside the speaker/headphone jack is broken or deformed.

Thanks so much. Yeah, I've done the ol' in-and-out with my stereo plug, no help. Your diagnosis sounds the most logical. Now I have to dig into my laptop...and break something else.
