Hi All,

I have an LG 42" 3DTV (42LB6500) and a Sony Home Theatre (5.1)(DAV-DZ690K)

Both have Digital Audio ports (TV - Out and HT - In)

I want to connect them in such a way that I get full 5.1 surround sound (They way a HT sounds like)

I would be playing movies through External HDD (WD My Passport 1TB)

My HT is a 1000W RMS.

Please suggest best connectivity and cables that I should get to achieve it.

Sounds like you have answered your own question. You need an digital audio cable (either toslink optical or coax digital) to make the connection. Your Sony has both inputs so just use the one that is the same as the TV audio output (probably optical).
Set the TV output to the correct audio type to get proper surround sound. Might be labeled 5.1 or multi channel.

So I bought a Digital Optical cable and plugged that to the TV's Digital Audio Out and into the Home Theatre's Digital Audio In....

I hear the sounds but my Center Speaker stays dead...

Meanwhile, I also have a Set Top Box with did it's Audio Out to DVDs Audio In (Its not optical cuz it (Set top box) has those yellow red white ports).

I did an audio test and my dvd played all 5.1 well but afterwards When I put on actual tv channel on it (EPL on Star Sports) the centre went dead....

So all in all Im getting a 5.0 sounds and not 5.1 (2 front, 2 back and subwoofer are working except for Centre Speaker) (Using Digital Optical for TV to DVD and three cable for Set Top Box to DVD)

Yellow Red and White is stereo only, you wont hear the center as that's on a different line entirely. Its not uncommon for Subwoofer and Centers to play as well through stereo mode but will depend on the Hifi unit the speakers are connected to, which seems is a limitation.

Regarding your TV's optical audio and Center speaker, some TV's with built in decoders like yours can use the TV's speakers as a center. Have a look at the TV's audio settings and see if you can turn off smart audio/ or center, anything relating to the TV speakers and see what you get.

No I understand the mode you're setting the DVD player to get incoming sounds.

What are you connecting to the TV that is not playing through the center speaker?

I'm connecting TV with Sony DVD Home Theatre using Digital Optical Cable (TOSLINK)..I have also noticed that if I set my HT to Pro Logic II then the centre speaker works alone...rest all don't.. But when I set my HT to RFD Multi (I don't know what RFD means) then I get 5.0 minus Centre Speakers...The Dialogues (and I guess everything) gets divided in 5.0 config..

Just going to have to play around with the settings.

Remember what I told you?

S/PDIF supports the following formats:

Single channel PCM (Mono)

Dual channel PCM (Stereo)

Compressed bitstreams up to 48Khz/16bps using AC3 (Dolby Digital) or DTS encoding mechanisms.

Surround audio across S/PSIF can only be achieved using AC3/DTS. Multichannel PCM (most desirable) is not possible over S/PDIF but is possible over HDMI.

Looks like your DVD player can only do Prologic from an external optical source, so the best it can do is simulate. I'm talking about optical in, not about playing DVD's.
