I had a feeling that it might be malware, although I've run Malware anti malware, Kaspersky's total security They've found PUP only, but the various checks I've done to see if the connection is working all the time have come back positive. Skype, voip works. I thought maybe the firewall was blocking the browsers but as far as I can see they're not.
I'm an amatuer at this, so I don't really know where I should look to check your suggestions. If you have the time and patience perhaps you could make it simpler for me go through your answers?

Someone posted a solution on another site suggesting I should write netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt. That came back with
-resetting Global failed
-resetting interface failed
-resetting unicast failed
resetting route failed
The requested operation requires elevation. There's no user specified settings to be reset.

Maybe that gives you more information than i could possibly give about the problem I'm having!

I'm grateful if you could point me in the right direction with your solutions and possibly mull over why there are no user settings to be reset. Is that the malware?

That is the correct command for resetting tcp stack. Requires elevation means run as admin. For IE...go to control panen internet options, connections, lan settings. Uncheck use proxy if there. For firefox, tools, options advanced, network settings. Use no proxy. I hate chrome and refuse to use it! Good luck...

I tried going into Int Options/connections/lan settings but the only box that was ticked was the 'automatically detect settings'
The use automatic config script and the use proxy server boxes were not ticked.

The Firefox wasn't possible to open at all so I couldn't get into the corresponding settings!"
