I am buying a alienware 17 r2 with 1tb and no ssd and am looking to upgrate it to having a ssd too; hopefully it has a slot for the 1tb hdd and an extra for a ssd. Can I just add any ssd to my alienware 17 r2 laptop or do i need some kind of laptop size ssd?

SSDs are laptop size (2.5 inches). I have replaced a few laptop stock drives with SSDs with no problems. I don't know of any laptop with more than one drive space however unless it is one of those tiny boot SDs.

That computer can take either one 2.5" hard disk (which could be a 2.5" SSD) or four M.2 SSDs.

M.2 SSDs are identical to conventional one, they are just a different form factor. Capacities and prices are the same, or very nearly so, as conventional SSDs. A full list of compatible drives from Crucial is given here: http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Alienware/alienware-17-r2

Personally, if I were equipping one of these laptops, I would choose the M.2 option as it allows a far greater capacity in all (and would make the laptop marginally lighter for the same capacity). But you cannot mix and match SSDs in conventional HDs in this computer.

McHenryB is only partially (ambiguously) correct in his answer. He says you can have EITHER one 2.5" disk OR four M.2 SSD's. This is not true. You can have all 5 slots filled, not either / or.

The Alienware 17 R2 can have up to 5 total drives - ONE slot accepts a 2.5" drive (either HDD or SSD, your choice). The other 4 slots are M.2 "gumstick" drive slots (SSD ONLY). (Look more like RAM chips than what you're used to seeing a SSD look like). Also note that the first 3 M.2 slots on this computer are SATA III (6Gb/s) and the fourth is a SATA II (3Gb/s).

Just so you know, there are different size M.2 drives as well as pinouts (They do that to help you out?!). The drive you need to look for is 80mm x 20mm size. I just bought myself a Samsung 850 evo 500GB on Amazon for $179. Here's a link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00TGIW1XG?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00

I do know better, because I have all 5 slots filled in mine and it works perfectly. (one 2.5" 1TB 7200RPM HDD, and four M.2 Samsung 850 evo 500GB SSD's).

Only issue I have with it is one of the M.2 slots is only SATA II (the others are SATA III) and the BIOS doesn't allow RAID configurations. (yet)

Hello
Maybe the Dell tech info is poorly worded. My Alienware 17 R2 laptop came with a 128 GB M.2 SSD and a spinning 2.5 inch hard drive with Windows on the SSD.
Photoshop upgrades keep filling the SSD which is what led me here. Thanks for this info it is very helpful.
