so I'm watching Video on my Alienware M17x r-2 and then all of a sudden the screen turn white and slightly purple and the display turns off slightly afterward, i connected the screen to and external monitor and the display work fine and does have the same problem, i also noticed that the computer still runs and function after this happens but the screen will be turned off, is my inverter going bad or is it something else, thanks for your help in advance.

Yes could be the inverter, or back light or the screen itself. If it's an LED display it likely does not have an inverter.
The inverter is cheap to buy to test if you can swap it yourself.
