How do I get a 2 jack headset to work with a single audio jack laptop?

Hello everyone, I have a headset that uses 2 jacks (normal male mic and speaker jacks) and I want to use them with my laptop which uses 1 audio jack. I don't think a splitter/joiner will work for this because the laptop actually uses "Realtek" audio software too choose whether the "inserted audio device" is a microphone or speakers (of some form). (So basically it isn't an audio jack).

Thanks for your help. TheRealBlackIce

A splitter, or in this case a Y-adapter, will work. The laptop has a 4-pole input, which combines the normal 3-pole connections of a stereo headset and microphone into one connection. Head to your nearest Radio Shack, Best Buy, or other electronics store and ask for a 3.5mm two-female 3-pole to one-male 4-pole Y-adapter.

It'll look like this:

Hi RazberyBandit,
the problem is, I don't think it is a 4 pole audio jack, like I said. I have already tried a combination of 3/4 pole jacks on earphones and headphones etc. I will show you what I mean. (I had to upload a pic to one drive to show you, so you will have to click on the link, sorry). http://1drv.ms/1Pgal34

Sounds like the go, probably just need to install some drivers, I will look into an adapter.
Thanks a lot for your time, I really appreciate it. TheRealBlackIce

I did this install and the only thing I can find different about this one and my original is that it actually shows up in the start menu search (windows 8). I believe it is purely a hardware issue, but thanks anyway.
I bought an adapter today which should show up within a week. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/USB-To-3-5mm-Mic-Headphone-Jack-Stereo-Headset-Sound-Audio-Adapter-Card-Compact-/291431604359?_trksid=p2141725.m3641.l6368.

Thanks. TheRealBlackIce

OK it says solved, but I am raising this thread not to open a new one, since theres so many of them, none of which has the solution for my problem.
I cannot get the headset (headphones with mic e.g. for gaming :)) to work even with the y splitter, one that jack with 3 rings
Realtek wont even give option for headset selection, it only gives me option for the mic in or headphones.
So i do not know is it Realtek problem or the jack problem

Many thanks
