This is probably not a new story . . . before I went on vacation, I could put an SD card in my (desktop) computer slot & the computer would read it. Since I've returned from vac the reader won't work at all. First of all, I know the power was off while I was gone because the clocks were blinking when I returned & the computer was off (although it has a surge protector). Could the card reader have been damaged? If so how does the computer read the card now? Or will it? I know my vacation pictures are still on the SD because I got paper copies made, but I want to share digital copies too.

Try to borrow an external card-reader (or just buy one, they don't cost much) to test whether or not the built-in one is faulty.
