I am about to buy a surround sound system for watching TV and watching movies by connecting it to the PC using HDMI, or watching movies through shared folders from PC.

What I would like to know:

Both the PC and a HomeTheatre are connecting to the TV by HDMI, which means I have to choose which one to be active. Of course PC should be to watch the movie, however I am not sure if in this case 5.1 will actually work. Same goes for watching movies from shared folders.

Solution
If your HT has ARCand is connected to the HDMI input of your TV that is labeled ARC (audio return channel) then the TV should be able to route the audio from your PC (connected to another HDMI input ) to the HT.
ARC eliminates having to add an additional audio cable to your HT. The TV should have a choice of what type of audio to send via the ARC. ARC would need to be turned on in the TV and selected on the HT.
If you don't have ARC then you will have two options. First is to us the audio output of the PC directly to the HT. Second is to use an audio extractor to connect audio to your HT.
