have a samsung dvd player & want to connect it to my hp laptop so that i can view a dvd. both have HDMI ports. how do i do it?

Almost no laptops have an HDMI "IN" port. They are almost all universally "OUT" ports. Unless your laptop has an HDMI input port, it can't be done.
Obviously, you could just buy an external optical drive to use with your laptop, such as this one:
