Sorry for long post, but this situation is so strange I have to put in every detail.

I tripped over my headphone cord that was connected to my front panel, it 3.5mm jack snapped so I had to replace them.

My microphone was also plugged in the front panel.
I got my new headphones, they work just fine, even in the front panel jack.

But my mic. It doesn't work anywhere.
I can't get it to work in the back of the card, I can't get it to work in the front panel mic jack.
It worked just fine in the front panel jack, but after the tripping I doesn't at all.

When I was plugging the mic in, I noticed the mic was picking up activity, so I recorded me plugging the mic in and out over and over while yelling at it.

I played back the audio, only heard the mic being plugged in and out, didn't hear me.

I plugged my headphones back in the front panel, and they work just fine.

I've tried swapping out the card with a DGX, which is the same thing but PCIx1 interface.
No luck with front panel, or the back of that card also.

Tried going into the Xonar settings and making sure the microphone setting was selected correctly, no luck.

What could be the problem? Do both of my sound cards have broken mic ports and broken front panel connectors?

Solution
even if you busted your case's front connectors, the rear of the soundcard should still work.

first thing i'd do is verify that the mic is working properly. does it work on other devices? also, if possible check that another headset or mic (3.5mm type) works with your pc.

if it is, i'd try...
-making sure mic shows up in recording devices and is defaulted
-modifying mic volume, mic gain, making sure mic is not muted
-uninstalling all sound drivers and reinstalling the newest version
