I have a Dell Inspiron 15. I've had it for 2.5 years and mainly use it for internet, netflix, and word/excel. It has gotten really slow and sometimes freezes. General specs are:

AMD Dual-Core E-450 Processor 1.65GHz with AMD Radeon HD 6320 Discrete-Class Graphics
320GB (5,400 RPM) SATA Hard Drive
4GB Single Channel DDR3 Memory (1 DIMM)
Dell Wireless 1503 card 802.11 b/g/n

I'm trying to figure out if upgrading the laptop to 8gb RAM would be worth it. I need the laptop to last for another 2 years if possible.

If you have never reinstalled Windows since you bought the laptop, then I suggest you back up any important files on the C: Drive and then reinstall Windows. Over time a lot of "junk" can populate the Windows Registry which can cause the operating system to slowdown. Reinstalling Windows will give you a clean Registry. The bad thing about doing this is you must update Windows and reinstall programs that you want to use. It can take a while to do, but if you know the laptop is no longer as fast as when it was new then doing this should be worth your time.

Upgrading the RAM to 8GB can help, but you should do so after reinstalling Windows.
