Sound over HDMI pc to HDTV

I have a little issue that I have been looking to for a couple weeks now without success...

I want to connect my PC on my samsung HDTV via a HDMI cable. On my PC I have a NVidia GTX 580 for a graphic card (who doesn't have any HDMI ports), so I plug the HDMI directly on my motherboard who is an ASrock Z68.

Then I have the video on the TV without any trouble, but the sound is still only on the PC.
I've seen a whole bunch of topics saying to get the HDMI on default on the playback sound options, but I've never been able to get the HDMI as a choice here...

What I've tried/done :

- Activating disable/disconnected stuff on the playback panel of the sound options
- Updating the intel graphics drivers
- desactivating my NVidia GC (even if it's obviously not what I want/need since I loose my 2 normal screens, but even that didn't make the HDMI as possible default playback device)

I'm a bit out of idea now...

Solution
if your card doesnt have hdmi output it should still have dvi. you can use a dvi->hdmi cable. i've used this same cable on my last system (7800gtx), my new system (gtx470) and the new gpu i installed in it (gtx770) without issue. i would try this.

if you want your gpu used, you need to use its own outputs not your onboard.

agreed, optical output is an option (if your tv has optical in) however be advised that you might only get 2.0 stereo instead of 5.1 surround over it depending on what your hardware supports. not a problem if you're only using the tv speakers but may be an issue if you have your tv arc connected to a home theater.

That's odd.
I would have thought all that you needed to do was go to sound options -> Playback devices -> Right Click -> Select one of -> Set as default device or Set as Default communication device.

Did you run this test?
In Playback Devices -> Right Click on the device (TV In your case) -> Test -> The test tones should come from the TV speakers. -> If yes, than all is well :)

@shaqblogs The problem is that the tv is not on the playback devices options :)

@ssddx i know the gpu will not be used in my case but it's not an issue. The biggest problem with my card is that I have only 2 DVI output (and already 2 screens), if y use à DVI => HDMI i would have to disconnect a screen each time (but it could be a solution, that or getting an optical cable but I wanted to avoid this option if possible :/)

You have a problem since it is not showing up at all...not detected.
1. Try another HDMI cable.
2. Try connecting from a different pc.
3. Google your tv and check if others have had this issue.
4. Google and check for problems detecting an hdmi device.

Somewhere it must be detected otherwise the image wouldn't show on the tv :)

1. Already done, same issue
2. Sadly I have only 1 pc with a HDMI port :/ so it might be the pc :/
3. Done, found nothing pertinent
4. Same :/

I will buy a HDMI-DVI Adapter and try this way
