How much is my laptop worth to sell?

Hi,

I am looking to replace my current laptop with a newer one as

1. The discrete graphics card has broken twice and I'm not willing to pay the £400 asking price from Dell to replace what is now an outdated graphics card for the second time and

2. My current laptop can't handle the latest games on high graphics.

My question is how much do you think it is worth to sell on somewhere like ebay, the only fault with it is that the discrete graphics card is not currently working, I don't know what's wrong with it, so for the past few months it has been only using the integrated graphics card without any issues, works flawlessly except for the obvious drop in frame rate when playing demanding games. Here are what I can find of the specs:

Alienware M17X R3
Intel Core i7-2760QM CPU @ 2.40GHz
8GB RAM
AMD Radeon HD 6990M (not currently working, crashes laptop if I try to switch graphics card from integrated to discrete)
750GB Hard Drive
64-Bit Operating System
Blu-Ray player
Integrated Webcam

I believe the integrated graphics are 5000 series.

Not sure what else there is as far as specs go, let me know if there is any more information you need as I'm not really very knowledgeable regarding detailed computer stuff. Oh and it cost me about the equivalent of $2000 to buy a few years ago if that matters.

Thanks a lot for your help!

I know you may be disappointed to hear this, but I think you could get $600-750. While the Alienware brand does carry value, your PC is several years old and the most valuable asset, the GPU, is not working. As it stands now, one could buy a new, non-Alienware PC with similar but updated components for under $1000, so your resale value is limited.

I kind of expected about that much, it's really annoying that the graphics card has broken, especially twice. I guess I'll just try and see what I can get, would it be selling "for parts or repair"? I mean the laptop still works fine it's just as if it has had the discrete graphics card taken out.

No, sell it as used without the graphic card. Just don't include the GPU in the specs you list. If you sell it for parts, people will assume the whole build has problems.

I would start it out at $700-750, and work down if you do not see any interest. Used laptop sales can be hit and miss; you may find and eager buyer, or you may have to significantly lower your price.

Good luck selling!

I'd get some estimates first. PawnGuru.com will get local pawn brokers and buy/sell shops to give you cash offers, so you can see if you can get more than just 'for parts'. good luck!
